This photo is shown below, before I used the water paint option, in Photoscape.

This year, as in years past, fall nesting begins on our back porch.

Melissa, at The Inspired Room, is hosting the annual Fall Nesting Party, beginning Wednesday September 2. Click the above link or the Fall Nesting button on my sidebar.

You might not begin Fall Nesting, until the season has officially arrived. I hope you’ll stop by Melissa’s for beautiful inspiration, whether you are starting your Autumn nest or waiting till later.

Remember Fall Nesting isn’t necessarily about bringing out the pumpkins and colorful leaves. Nesting also includes, lighting candles and maybe having a little fire in the fireplace on those cooler evenings.

It also includes changes in vignettes around your home,  bringing out the comfy quilts and looking through your cook books and recipe files for yummy soups and other cool weather meals.

                     fallnesting2A

As Memorial Day signals the beginning of Summer, Labor Day signals Autumn; even though the actual season change is still a couple of weeks away.

Summer 2009, here in Missouri, brought cooler than normal temperatures.  The thermometer reached 90’s only a few times. Many days had the feel of early Autumn temperatures, without that special touch only Autumn air can bring.

The past two weeks, the air has begun to have that autumnal feel.  The light is golden, some trees and shrubs are showing a tiny bit of color.  Last week, when I heard the crows, as they flew overhead, I was pleasantly reminded of my favorite time of year.

A fern sits upon a metal 3 legged milking stool, used by J, when he was a child, on the family farm.

The fireplace screen is made of three iron panels, J put together. The panels were purchased at Welcome Home (now closed).  Above the screen, a vintage garden gate, with a basket of silk blackeyed susans, and a sign from Eagle Fork Farm, Moscow Mills, Missouri. The candle lantern, hanging on the side of the fireplace, is from Evergreen Mfg. Osage Beach, Missouri.

A Jim Shore rooster, Something to Crow About, awaits Fall on the shelf above the stove. The photo, just above the rooster, shows the lane going away from our home, on the family farm, during winter.  There are three other photos of the winter lane, in the frame.

We are convinced we will “pay” for this fabulous Summer, with a harsher Winter, than we’ve experienced in the past few years.  Whatever the weather brings, we’ll manage.  As Scarlett said…I’ll think about that tomorrow.  As for now, I’m doing a little Fall Nesting, on the back porch and other rooms of our home.

Just for fun, I edited several photos, for this post, in Photoscape. A free editing program.

Pat, I love visiting your blog. I love your front porch. I do not have a blog of my own. I was a regular reader on Great Impressions. Just wanted to let you know how beautiful your decorating is through out your house. How do you keep your porch so clean? No Dust? My back patio is all set up but it has dust everywhere. I am always having to go out and wipe it down. Could be because I live in South Louisiana.n Take care, Debbie G

Pat-

You do such a beautiful job & make me want to do some nesting myself. We are feeling cooler days here in Hoosier land also & I keep thinking we may be in for a rough winter! I just started getting a few autumn things out this week & hope to look for a few more accents up in Amish country. Looking forward to a beautiful Fall & will post photos later...

Thank you so much for your lovely pictures. While I am not ready to decorate for Fall for at least another month...(It's still over 110 here.) It does get me looking to the future and what I might do this year. It is kinda frustrating when everyone is talking about fall and cooler days, and I'm still sweating!!! LOL! You mentioned that the photo editing software is free. Did you download from somewhere? I love the water color effect!

Good afternoon Pat, Your porch is absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful place to sip hot coffee, tea, or even better yet hot cocoa. Now you have me in an autumn mood. I guess it's time to start bringing out the pumpkins :>)

Pat, your photos are so lovely - great effect with the watercolor! And now a question.....do you take the cushions and wooden table and chairs inside at night. Surely you don't leave them out for any kind of weather to strike??? Here in Georgia, we have a lot of humidity and it has been a wet summer - sometimes "out of the blue" with no warning! Linda

Oh Pat, I will forever and ever love that gate with the sunflowers on the brick wall! The Jim Shore rooster with the wagon I've never seen. But it's perfect for fall! I didn't know you could do that in Photoscape either, but then you teach me something new all the time. You have the prettiest images, the prettiest vignettes of every season. I am always completely enthralled when I visit you!

Just beautiful! Fall is also my most favorite time of the year. Not that we here in So. Cal get much of a true Autumn, but I adore the colors of fall, and all that goes along with it! It is triple digits here, so I will wait another week or so.

Hello Pat, I was waiting for you to decorate your beautiful porch. I love the fireplace and the way you have decorated around it. It is just gorgeous. I love the photos where you have changed the look with water color and an antique look as well. The Elgin-Cottrell is really gorgeous. The China closet is so interesting. Love the editing and your beautiful photos. I am ready to do more fall nesting and cool weather cooking.

Here in the sunshine state, we're not anywhere near Fall. There's been a few nights when we got a teeny tiny hint of cooler weather and it was nice.

Everything looks wonderful.

Pat - The porch looks great for a morning cup of tea or an afternoon cider. I too, love the fall. While I was teaching I could not wait to get home to enjoy the crisp air and leaves. Now that we are retired, I would spend every minute outside if I could.

We were out on the lake today with friends. The water was reflecting the blue sky and it was breathtaking. I love it here in the fall. We come home tomorrow to see how tall the grass had gotten. HD has a doctor's appointment and we will be home for a few days.

I am glad J is doing better.

Thanks for the lovely pictures. The watercolor option is so neat.

Hi Pat,
Beautiful, interesting, and educational post! It's always a pleasure to visit you and see various aspects of your wonderful home and places you visit.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving the thoughtful comment. I was moved and gratified by your generous compliment on the "cup reflection" photograph ... coming from you (whose talent I respect so much)... it was like winning an Oscar!

I am one of those people who cannot give up summer too early! I love Melissa's though, and will go and get some ideas!

It's weird, this year I don't seem to have the push to get my fall things out, yet fall is my favorite season! Maybe I am just a couple of weeks behind!

Your pictures are gorgeous!! That watercolor photo technique is interesting, I'll have to check that out.

It's warmed up a bit in Nashville as the week has gone by but I'm still feeling very fall-ish and will be pulling out my decor this weekend. Also, the scent of a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte is tempting me, may have to satisfy that craving this afternoon!
