“When one has tasted watermelon he knows what the angels eat.”

~Mark Twain

During the 1950’s, our family celebrated July 4th at my grandparents’ home.  A galvanized wash tub was filled with ice and bottles of soda(cokes in our neck ‘o the woods, no matter the flavor).  Nestled in with the “cokes” was a great big watermelon.  We always had our first watermelon, of Summer, on the 4th of July.

"You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns,
tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics
where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness.  You may think
you have overeaten, but it is patriotism."

Again, I simply had to comment here on your blog...for the imagery is breath taking. Thank you for sharing the joy of the 4th with all your friends and fans!

Your photos are beautiful, Pat. The shimmer of the water is breathtaking. I grew up in New Mexico and to us, everything was "Coke." We'd go into a restaurant, order a Coke, and the server would say, "What kind?" LOL
Happy 4th of July to you!
hugs, Sue

I so loved Erma Bombeck. So many of today's young women missed her sarcasm and wry wit, for she was gone too soon. I miss her because she made sense of a mother's/woman's world in a way no one else could. Love the water diamonds. Brilliant gems!

Happy 4th, Pat! Your pics are just the perfect example of a fun 4th of July celebrated at the lake. so fun!

And how happy I am for you that you got yet another Canon Rebel! Maybe I should have gone ahead with the T2i too, but hopefully there's not a ton of difference in them & mine will be all I can handle for a few years. I'm having fun with it, but do realize how very much more I have to learn.

I love that Irma quote - love of family is one of the foundations of our country -

What a neat tradition - to have the first watermelon of the summer on 4th of July. It is so neat to pass those memories and traditions along to our families.

My favorite shot - has to be the diamonds on the water. Did you edit those is - or was it just the glorious sun on a beautiful summer day?

Either way - Wonderful post!

simple things tasted so much better when we were kids. Especially if it came out of a old tub of ice.

I made home made vanilla ice cream yesterday -- but we have an electric churn. Doesn't have the same appeal, but it does have more calories, I'm sure of it (:
