Do you remember old fashioned drugstore soda fountains?
I remember two 1950’s soda fountains, in particular.
Our family physician’s office was above Joe Knight’s Drugstore. Joe Knight’s had a soda fountain, where you could find real Cherry Cokes, Vanilla Phosphates, and Ice Cream Cones, among other things.
Joe Knight’s Drugstore brings back happy memories of visiting our doctor.
Back in those days, doctors made house calls. Dr. Jenkins visited our home, more than once. Visits to his office were made extra special by the prescription, given us, after each and every visit. Along with the usual stick of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit Gum, we were given a prescription for an ice cream cone from Joe Knight’s Drugstore.
Another drugstore, in our town, served the best limeades. When my grandmother was in the hospital, one summer, I remember going to the drugstore to buy Granny a limeade, before visiting her.
Those were the days when children, under the age of 14, were not permitted to visit family, in hospital. Mother delivered our limeade, while we stood on the sidewalk below Granny’s window. She loved those limeades.
Today, Sonic Drive-in Limeades are pretty close to the ones from the drugstore.
Sandwiches, as well as sodas and ice cream treats, were served at soda fountains. One of my favorite egg salads was served at the drugstore where we bought limeades.
Mother made the salad, at home, too. This is the recipe I’m sharing today.
Margie’s Egg & Olive Salad
3 or 4 hard boiled eggs
2 or 3 tablespoons salad olives, sliced or chopped
2 tablespoons Miracle Whip or Mayo
(Mayo was used in the “old days”)
Dash of Pepper
Sprinkle of Paprika
Chop eggs, add olives and Miracle Whip. Mix and chill about 1/2 an hour.
Spread on toast. Serve with raw veggies and/or chips.
I loved Mother’s egg and olive sandwiches; still do.
Seeing these chips and talking about ice cream reminds me of another “treat” from long ago days. Did you ever order chips on the side, when you bought vanilla ice cream at a soda fountain? No kiddin’, this is a tasty treat!
