Thursday

Bittersweet, Indian Corn & Pumpkin Pie

We took a little half day trip, to Illinois, yesterday. We were craving Catfish Fritters and Hushpuppies. Naturally, a great place to find this is, Grafton, IL. Our drive took us by Odelehr's Roadside Market, in Brussels. You might remember Odelehr's from an earlier post, this year.
The first thing I noticed, at the market, was a bin of Pie Pumpkins. I could not resist the temptation to buy a few.
I baked the pie, pictured, this morning. As soon as it was cool enough, I whipped heavy cream, with sugar and pure vanilla extract and had a slice of pie, for lunch.

We also purchased Bittersweet, for the hearth room mantle, Indian Corn, Red & Golden Delicious Apples, Apple Cider and jars of Jellies and Preserves. Growing in the field, in the background photo, is Grain Sorghum, also called Milo. The Milo fields, we've seen this fall, are beautiful.

This photo shows some of the gorgeous Mums at Odelehr's Roadside Market.

There were Pumpkins and Gourds in all shapes and colors.

After leaving Odelehr's, we drove to Grafton, where we bought Catfish Fritters and Hushpuppies at Beasley Fish Market. We ate our early supper, sitting beside the river.

Yesterday was a beautiful fall day, in our part of the Midwest.

The Land of Blog, Barefoot Catfish & Other Tales

~Road to Cedar Hill Resort~

When I entered The Land of Blog, just over four months ago, I had no idea where the road would lead. Back Porch Musings took on a life of it's own and has evolved into a photo journal of our family, home, gardens and meanderings. Our family, as any other family, has had happy times and sad times, through the years. I decided, from the beginning, to write of the happy times here at the back porch.

Those "Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer"*, with 90 degree temps and dripping humidity, have arrived in Missouri!

Our Saturday adventure was a quest for "Real Tomatoes". Our journey began early, hoping to be home before the heat of day. If you've been visiting the back porch awhile, you know we were meandering until the heat of day was well under way!

Once again, we boarded the Winfield Ferry, crossing the Mississippi River to Illinois. From the ferry landing, the road leads to Brussels, Illinois. One of our favorite places to visit is Odelehr's Roadside Market at Brussels.

We purchased peaches, tomatoes, green beans, sweet corn and jars of apple butter and pickled beets. I had one of those excellent Calhoun County peaches for breakfast, this morning. Our Sunday dinner will be fried chicken, green beans and potatoes, sweet corn and sliced tomatoes. A wonderful old fashioned country meal.

We learned that 8% of Odelehr's peach crop was destroyed by the late frost. The apple crop was damaged, also.

Other than fresh produce, the Odelelhr's offer canned foods in glass jars, beautiful baby quilts, afghans and other crafts.

We drove to Hardin, Il for a delicious lunch of Barefoot Catfish. The photos show the Barefoot Restaurant sign, in the background, a plate of Catfish Fritters and the view from our tableside window.
Barefoot Restaurant, sitting at the edge of the Illinois River, was under water during the 1993 flood. The kitchen required major renovation. As always, "river people" rally after floods and come back strong.

On our way back to the ferry landing, we took a little detour to Cedar Hill Resort on the banks of the Mississippi River. After a cold drink, we continued to the Winfield Ferry and our return to Missouri. While aboard the ferry, vehicle engines must be turned off. Without air conditioning, as we crossed, I tried to remember what I said a couple of weeks ago, about southern women not perspiring, only developing a glow!

Fried Green Tomatoes, a Lily Pad & Changes

Last Saturday, J and I shopped at the Farmers Market, on the corner of highways 5 and 54, Camdenton, Missouri. Several vendors offered beautiful fresh vegetables, jams, jellies and crafts. I was hoping for Strawberries, but it's still a bit early. Perhaps, this Saturday, we'll find them at the market.

I bought fresh garlic and roasted it with a drizzle of "evoo" and made a delicious salad of lettuce, found at the market, and green onion, with Balsamic Vinegar as dressing. J bought a jar of Strawberry Jam, from Ozark Jam Kitchen. Among the vegetables we found were the green Tomatoes, pictured above. The photo, at right in the collage, shows how I prepared them.

The Leaf Lady was selling concrete leaf castings. We brought this one home for the side garden. We saw one with a frog. I might have to have one of those, too. It would look great next to the creek.

I made a few changes in the dining room, during the past 2 weeks. I took up the wool rug and replaced it with a sea grass rug, for summer. I may leave it there year round. The print that was over the console table in the dining room was moved to above the wine buffet. A mirror was brought down from a guest room, to hang over the console. The room seems to be lighter and more airy since I made the changes. The photos in the grid are from several seasons of the year.
I moved the swan bench from the foyer to the living room and replaced it with the small upholstered bench, that sat in front of the living room windows. The black rectangular wool rug, in the foyer, was brought from the bedroom to replace the round rug, now stored away. With the exception of the purchase of the sea grass rug, all changes were achieved by reusing things from other rooms.
I put the door photo grid together this morning. These are a few of the looks our front porch and door have had over the past three years. The door remained painted white, until last summer, when I finally made a decision on paint color. I usually make decorating decisions quickly. However, that door was a dilemma! I love Charleston green, which is an almost black green. I found Midnight Green in American Traditions (Lowes), that was just the color I was looking for.

I'll try to post again, Sunday evening, when we return from the lake. We have a busy week, next week. J is scheduled for Rotator Cuff Surgery Monday, the 18th. They say he will return home, next day. I have a room booked near the hospital. Last year, 2006, was the first year in 20, J was not hospitalized, so I've made the 50 mile drive many times. I decided, in Dec 2005, when J had his Appendix removed, I would book a room next time!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
